The epidemic of jukebox scores and kids’ stuff, as well as the pretentiousness of Sondheim and flatulence of Lloyd Webber, are part of the problem. But nothing depresses me more than a sense that as budgets for stagings rise, the quality of singing proportionately declines. I’m now sick to the back teeth of listening to poorly trained voices roaring, quavering or crooning into mikes with the volume dial turned up to 11. |
